Frequently asked questions

Where can I recycle an e-bike battery?

Battery retailers, household hazardous waste (HHW) facilities and many bike shops in the Battery Network e-bike program take lithium-ion e-bike batteries. Call ahead: general recycling centers often do not accept them.

Can I put a lithium-ion battery in the trash?

No. Lithium-ion batteries in trash and curbside bins cause fires in garbage trucks and sorting facilities. In California it is illegal to throw away any battery.

How do I prepare a battery for drop-off?

Tape over the terminals or put the battery in its own clear plastic bag. If it is swollen, damaged or hot, keep it outside in a metal container or sand and tell the facility before you bring it.
